WIESBADEN – The Federation, Länder and municipalities spent a total of 14.5 billion euros on culture in the Covid-19 year of 2020. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was an increase of almost 16%, or 2.0 billion euros, compared with the previous year. The large rise in expenditure was mainly due to the Covid-19 emergency aid measures of the Federation and the Länder. This special effect led to a 55% increase in cultural expenditure compared with 2010. As a result, the Federation, Länder and municipalities spent a total of 175 euros per capita on culture in 2020. Public expenditure on culture accounted for 0.43% of the gross domestic product. These results have been published by the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder in the Culture Finance Report 2022.
