Press release No. 540 of 15 December 2022
WIESBADEN – The number of visits to cultural institutions in Germany in part fell dramatically in the Covid year of 2020 due to pandemic-related closures and restricted access regulations. Compared with 2019, visits to German cinemas fell by more than two thirds in 2020 (-68%) to 38.1 million visits (2019: 118.6 million), a historic low since the start of the time series in 2000. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on data from a wide range of different cultural institutions. The number of visits per inhabitant is 0.5. In 2019, each inhabitant had gone to the cinema 1.4 times, on average. The statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder have included these and other results in their new publication “Kulturindikatoren auf einen Blick“ (Cultural indicators at a glance) (only in german).
