Press release No. 559 of 22 December 2022
WIESBADEN – An academic career begins with higher education and can lead to a professorship at a university. As primary occupation, just over one in four professorships (27%) were held by women at universities in Germany in 2021 (2020: 26%), according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Women are actually overrepresented among students starting their academic career. More than half (52%) of new entrants were women in the winter semester of 2021/2022. Women accounted for even 53% of the final examinations passed at universities (excluding doctoral degrees) in the examination year of 2021.
