Press release No. N 071 of 19 December 2022
- Preliminary microcensus results on the housing situation for the 1st half of 2022 also show considerably higher average rents for households which moved into their rented dwellings in 2019 or later
- Approximately 70% of households live in dwellings heated by fossil energy sources
WIESBADEN – People living in big cities have to pay markedly higher rents than those living in medium-sized towns or rural areas. Households in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants stated that they paid an average net rent exclusive of heating expenses of 8.30 euros per square metre in the first half of 2022. That was 30% more than in small towns and rural municipalities, where the average net rent exclusive of heating expenses amounted to 6.40 euros. In medium-sized towns with 20,000 to 100,000 inhabitants, households had to pay 6.90 euros per square metre, on average. This is shown by the half-yearly report on the additional microcensus survey covering the housing situation, which was evaluated in advance and of which the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) publishes results for the first time. Detailed data on the housing situation and first results for the entire year of 2022 will be released at the beginning of April 2023.
