WIESBADEN – In 2022, the real (price-adjusted) turnover of the retail enterprises in Germany was 0.6% lower, and the nominal (not price-adjusted) turnover 7.8% higher, than in the previous year, according to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). In the first half of 2022, real turnover was up 3.1% on the first half of 2021, whereas it was markedly down (-4.1%) year on year in the second half of 2022. The main reason for the real slump in turnover in 2022 probably was the marked increase in consumer prices of food and energy, for example. In addition, German retail trade enterprises had generated a record turnover in 2021.
