Press Number of air passengers more than doubled in 2022

  • Over 155 million air passengers used major German airports in 2022, which was more than twice the number recorded in the previous year
  • However, the number of passengers was still 31.5% below the all-time high of 2019
  • Compared with the pre-crisis level of 2019, the decrease in intra-German air transport (-59.5%) was markedly larger than in international transport (-28.3%)

WIESBADEN – In 2022 the number of people who embarked or disembarked at the 23 major German airports was more than twice as high as in the previous year. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the airports counted roughly 155.2 million passengers. That was a 111.0% increase on 2021, a year which was more strongly affected by the Covid pandemic. However, the number of passengers was still far below (-31.5%) the pre-crisis level of 2019 when the major airports recorded an all-time high of air passengers (226.7 million).
