WIESBADEN – The Russian attack on Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia had a marked impact on German foreign trade in 2022. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that German exports of goods to Russia fell by 45.2% to 14.6 billion euros compared with 2021. In the ranking of major destinations for German exports, Russia fell from place 15 to place 23 compared with a year earlier. Russia was an important energy supplier for Germany until the second half of the year. War in Ukraine led to sharp price rises for energy imports. As a result, the value of German imports from Russia increased by 6.5% to 35.3 billion euros in 2022. The quantity of goods imported from Russia, however, fell by 41.5%. As a consequence, Russia fell from place 12 to place 14 in the ranking of major suppliers of goods. Missing energy imports from Russia were in part replaced by supplies from other eastern European countries, in particular Kazakhstan.
