WIESBADEN – Roughly 45.9 million people were in employment in Germany in the fourth quarter of 2022. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment rose by 107,000 (+0.2%) compared with the previous quarter. In the third quarter, the increase was slightly lower, at 0.1%, or 38,000.

Without adjustment for seasonal effects, the number of persons in employment increased by as many as 258,000, or 0.6%, compared with the third quarter of 2022. It is a usual phenomenon that the number of persons in employment goes up in the fourth quarter of a year compared with the previous quarter. However, the increase in 2022 was higher than the relevant average of the three pre-crisis years 2017 to 2019 (+217,000 people; +0.5%). As a result, the number of persons in employment reached a new historical high. In the third quarter of 2022, the number increased by 106,000, or 0.2%, to 45.7 million, breaking the former record of 45.6 million persons in employment that was set in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Detailed data and long time series on persons in employment for Germany are available in the GENESIS-Online database in the tables on national accounts of the Federation (81000-0011 and 81000-0016) and on the labour market (13321).
