WIESBADEN – At the end of 2022, roughly 3.08 million people were registered as seeking protection in the Central Register of Foreigners. The number of registered people seeking protection rose by 1.14 million compared with the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This increase, which is due to the forced migration from Ukraine, is the highest seen within a reference year since the statistics began in 2007. Roughly 1.01 million Ukrainians were seeking protection in Germany at the end of 2022 as a consequence of the Russian war of aggression. People seeking protection are foreigners who, referring to international law, humanitarian or political reasons, are staying in Germany, according to information from the Central Register of Foreigners.
