WIESBADEN – Cars with a traditional combustion engine still accounted for the majority of German car exports and imports in 2022, although foreign trade with electric vehicles is growing in importance. In 2022, roughly 500,000 electric cars to the value of 24.2 billion euros were exported. That is just under two thirds (+65.2%) more than in the previous year, when roughly 300,000 electric cars to the value of 12.6 billion euros were exported. The most important customer for electric cars in 2022 was the United Kingdom (14.0% in volume terms), followed by the United States (13.1%). An increase in imports was recorded, too. 358,000 electric cars to the value of 10.5 billion euros were imported, which is 22.2% more than in 2021 (293,000 cars to the value of 7.6 billion euros).
