WIESBADEN – Roughly 45.6 million people were in employment in Germany in the first quarter of 2023. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment rose by 150,000 (+0.3%) on the previous quarter. This follows increases of 118,000 persons (+0.3%) in the fourth quarter of 2022, 46,000 persons (+0.1%) in the third quarter of 2022 and 133,000 persons (+0.3%) in the second quarter of 2022. The positive employment trend therefore also continued at the beginning of 2023.

Without seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment decreased by 305,000, or 0.7%, on the fourth quarter of 2022. A decrease in employment in the first quarter of a year is a usual seasonal phenomenon. The decrease in 2023 was, however, slightly lower than the average of the three pre-crisis years 2017 to 2019 (-336,000 persons; -0.8%).

Detailed data and long time series on persons in employment for Germany are available in the GENESIS-Online database in the tables on national accounts of the Federation (81000-0011 and 81000-0016) and on the labour market (13321).
