WIESBADEN – Roughly 46.1 million persons resident in Germany were in employment in November 2023. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment rose slightly by 19,000 (0.0%) compared with the previous month. A comparable increase was reported in October 2023, when the number of persons in employment rose by 18,000 month on month, following three consecutive declines. Overall, however, the seasonally adjusted level of employment has fallen slightly by 2,000 persons since June 2023.


Without seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment in November 2023 rose by 38,000 (+0.1%) on October 2023. This month-on-month increase was slightly lower than in November 2022 (+41,000 people). However, the increase means that the number of persons in employment also reached a new all-time high in November 2023, after passing the 46 million mark for the first time in October.

Slower upward trend year on year

Compared with November 2022, the number of persons in employment in November 2023 was up by 0.4%, or 206,000. The year-on-year rate of change was +0.5% in both September and October 2023, following +1.0% at the beginning of the year. Compared with the previous year, the long-term upward trend on the labour market therefore continued at a slower pace.

Adjusted unemployment rate at 3.1% in November 2023

According to results of the labour force survey, 1.35 million people were unemployed in November 2023. This represented an increase of 27,000, or 2.1%, compared with November 2022. Compared with the same month of the previous year, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.0%.

Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed stood at 1.36 million in November 2023, which was an increase of 5,000 on October 2023. Compared with the previous month, the adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.1%.
