Wholesale selling prices, February 2024
-3.0% on the same month a year earlier
-0.1% on the previous month
WIESBADEN – In February 2024, the selling prices in wholesale trade were 3.0% lower than in February 2023. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the change on the previous year was -2.7% in January 2024 and -2.6% in December 2023. Compared with January 2024, wholesale prices decreased slightly by 0.1% in February 2024.
Decline in prices of mineral oil products
The drop in prices in the wholesale of mineral oil products compared with February 2023 (-3.5%) also had the biggest impact on the overall development of wholesale prices in February 2024. The prices of mineral oil products, however, rose by 0.3% compared with January 2024. Lower year-on-year wholesale prices were recorded in particular for grain, unmanufactured tobacco, seeds and animal feeds (-20.8%), chemical products (-15.0%), metals and metal ores (-14.4%), milk, milk products, eggs, edible fats and oils (-6.1%).
By contrast, the wholesale prices of fruit, vegetables and potatoes (+7.3%) were higher than in February 2023. The prices of beverages (+5.1%) and tobacco products (+5.0%) were also up at wholesale level in February 2024 compared with a year earlier.
Methodological notes:
The indices of wholesale selling prices will be rebased to 2021 as of reference month April 2024. First results for the new base year will be released in May 2024.
