Press release No. 193 of 17 May 2024
- Imports from the People's Republic of China were down 11.7% from the 1st quarter of 2023, while 10.9% of all imported goods still came from China
- More than one fourth of all imported electric cars came from China
- The United States were Germany’s most important trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2024 with a foreign trade volume of 63.2 billion euros
WIESBADEN – As imports from the People's Republic of China declined considerably, Germany’s most important trading partner of many years ranked only second in the list of Germany’s major trading partners in the 1st quarter of 2024. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the value of the goods exported from Germany to China fell by 1.1% to 24.0 billion euros compared with the same quarter a year earlier, whereas imports from China decreased by 11.7% to 36.0 billion euros. The volume of foreign trade (total exports and imports) with China, which amounted to 60.0 billion euros, was therefore lower than the foreign trade volume with the United States (63.2 billion euros). In the 1st quarter and full year of 2023, the value of the goods traded with China slightly exceeded the foreign trade volume with the United States.
