Methodological notes:
The differing comparative periods must be taken into account in all press releases on short-term indicators. Short-term economic monitoring focuses on comparisons with the previous month or previous quarter. These reflect short-term economic trends. Year-on-year comparisons, by contrast, enable long-term comparisons of levels and are hardly influenced by seasonal fluctuations.
The number of persons in employment from the employment accounts differs from that of the labour force survey, which has been integrated into the microcensus. The differences are mainly due to the different conceptual approaches of the two statistical systems (national and domestic concept). Background information on the differences in the results is available in the explanatory notes (only in German) on the statistics. For information on the microcensus and the labour force survey please refer to the relevant theme page (only in German) on the website of the Federal Statistical Office.
Persons in employment and unemployed persons are counted according to the employment status concept of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Therefore, the unemployment figures shown here differ from registered unemployment as determined and published by the Federal Employment Agency in accordance with the German Social Code. In the European Statistical System, the results of the labour force surveys are used as a standard basis for calculating unemployment rates.
Recalculation of the employment time series as part of the 2024 major revision of national accounts
With today's release of the results for June 2024, the Federal Statistical Office provides time series on employment in Germany as of 1991 which were recalculated as part of the 2024 major revision of national accounts. In this revision, as is the case in every major revision of national accounts (only in German), the previous results from 1991 onwards were checked and new information was integrated into the calculations.
Throughout the whole revision period as of 1991, the 2024 major revision of national accounts has resulted in a slight increase in the quarterly levels of the persons-in-employment time series based on the domestic concept. This increase amounted to an average of roughly 22,000 (+0.1%). Based on the national concept, the persons-in-employment time series decreased by an average of 4,000 (0.0%) during the same period. The opposing revision effects were due to the recalculation of the numbers of cross-border commuters. The information previously published about the short-term development of employment in Germany has been confirmed.
Detailed results of the 2024 major revision of national accounts for employment and of the working time and labour volume accounts of the Institute for Employment Research will be published in the press release of 16 August 2024 regarding the 2nd quarter of 2024.
