Wholesale selling prices, July 2024

WIESBADEN – In July 2024, the selling prices in wholesale trade were 0.1% lower than in July 2023. Compared with the same month a year earlier, the rate of change was -0.6% in June 2024, and -0.7% in May 2024. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that wholesale prices in July 2024 rose by 0.3% on June 2024.
Lower prices for chemical products, higher prices for coffee and cocoa
The main reason for the year-on-year decrease in wholesale prices (total) in July 2024 were lower prices in the wholesale of chemical products (-8.4%), which declined by 0.4% compared with June 2024. Year on year, lower prices were also reported in the wholesale of live animals (-9.5%), iron, steel and ferrous semi-finished metal products (-7.7%) and computers and peripheral equipment (-5.5%).
By contrast, the wholesale prices of coffee, tea, cocoa and spices (+19.5%) were higher than in July 2023, as were the wholesale prices of non-ferrous ores, non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous semi-finished metal products (+15.4%). At wholesale level, waste and scrap (+15.2%), sugar, confectionery and bakery products (+9.5%) and tobacco products (+4.7%) also cost more in July 2024 than a year earlier.
