Press release No. 309 of 13 August 2024
WIESBADEN – 79,203 people died in Germany in July 2024, according to extrapolated figures of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This was 4% above the median of the years 2020 to 2023 for that month. According to data of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), temperatures in July (only in German) were high enough for a heat-related increase in mortality to be plausible. Germany's National Meteorological Service (DWD), too, registered several hot spells in July. An increase in mortality figures in connection with exposure to heat is a well-known effect that has been frequently observed in summer months in the past (only in German).
