Wholesale selling prices, September 2024
-1.6% on the same month a year earlier
-0.3% on the previous month
WIESBADEN – In September 2024, the selling prices in wholesale trade were 1.6% lower than in September 2023. Compared with the same month a year earlier, the rate of change was -1.1% in August 2024, and -0.1% in July 2024. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that wholesale prices in September 2024 fell by 0.3% on August 2024.
Lower prices for mineral oil products, higher prices for coffee and cocoa
The main reason for the year-on-year decrease in wholesale prices (total) in September 2024 were lower prices in the wholesale of mineral oil products (-14.6%). Compared with August 2024, these prices dropped by 4.5%. Year on year, lower prices were also reported in the wholesale of live animals (-5.8%), iron, steel and ferrous semi-finished metal products (-5.8%) and computers and peripheral equipment (-5.2%).
By contrast, the wholesale prices of coffee, tea, cocoa and spices were higher (+24.2%) than in September 2023, as were the wholesale prices of non-ferrous ores, non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous semi-finished metal products (+15.8%). In September 2024, sugar, confectionery and bakery products (+9.4%), waste and scrap (+8.8%) and tobacco products (+5.6%) also were more expensive at the wholesale level than a year earlier.
