WIESBADEN − The inflation rate in Germany, measured as the year-on-year change in the consumer price index (CPI), stood at +2.0% in June 2025. This was the lowest rate since October 2024 (also +2.0%). The inflation rate was +2.1% in both May and April 2025. "The rate of inflation eased again slightly in June and reached the lowest level registered in the first half of the year. In addition to the continued decline in energy prices, food price inflation slowed in particular," says Ruth Brand, President of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). "On the other hand, the above-average increase in service prices continued to drive up inflation." Overall, consumer prices remained unchanged in June 2025 (0.0%) compared with May 2025.
Energy product prices down 3.5% compared with June 2024
The prices of energy products were 3.5% lower in June 2025 than in the same month a year earlier. The decrease was therefore again less pronounced than in the preceding months (May 2025: -4.6%; April 2025: -5.4%). Motor fuel prices (-4.6%), in particular, were down in June 2025 from a year earlier. The price of household energy fell by 2.8% in the same period, with consumers particularly benefiting from lower prices for firewood, wood pellets and other solid fuels (-5.6%), heating oil (-5.6%) and electricity (-2.4%). The prices of district heating (-0.1%) and natural gas (+0.1%) remained almost unchanged compared with the same month of the previous year.
2.0% increase in food prices year on year
Food prices in June 2025 were 2.0% higher than a year earlier. The rise in food prices in June 2025 therefore slowed to the level of overall inflation. In May 2025, the rate of price increase was +2.8%. In the period from June 2024 to June 2025, the prices of fruit, in particular, increased (+7.4%). Significant price increases were also recorded for sugar, jam, honey and other confectionery (+5.3%) and for dairy products and eggs (+3.6%). Sharp price increases were recorded for some of these products (such as chocolate: +17.4%), while a noticeable decline in prices was registered for others (e.g. sugar: -28.6%). In addition, below-average price increases were observed, for instance, for fish, fish products and seafood (+0.6%) and for bread and cereals (+0.5%). Vegetables, for example, cost less than they did a year earlier (-3.0%, including potatoes: -11.2%).
Inflation rate excluding food and energy at +2.7%
Excluding energy prices, the inflation rate stood at +2.6% in June 2025. The inflation rate excluding food and energy, often referred to as core inflation, was +2.7% in June 2025. Both rates have exceeded overall inflation since January 2024, thereby demonstrating that inflation was above average in other important product groups.
Service prices registered above-average increase of 3.3% year on year
The prices of services (total) in June 2025 were up 3.3% compared with the same month a year earlier, following an increase of 3.4% in May 2025. From June 2024 to June 2025, higher prices were recorded in particular for combined passenger transport services (+11.4%), services of social facilities (+8.5%) and insurance services (+8.1%). Above-average price increases were also observed for in-patient health services (+6.5%) and the maintenance and repair of vehicles (+5.6%). Many other services were also markedly more expensive than a year earlier, such as water supply and miscellaneous services relating to the dwelling, and restaurant services (+4.1% in each case) as well as package international holidays (+3.8%). Net rents exclusive of heating expenses (+2.0%) continued to be a significant factor contributing to the development of service prices. By contrast, only a few services cost less than in the same month a year earlier, for example telecommunications (-1.4%) and air tickets (-1.3%).
Goods prices up 0.8% on June 2024
The prices of goods (total) rose 0.8% from June 2024 to June 2025. In May 2025, the rate of price increase was 0.9%. By contrast, price decreases were recorded not only for energy (-3.5%) but also for mobile phones (-7.1%), information processing equipment (-3.8%) and clothing (-0.5%).

The consumer price index in June 2025 remained unchanged compared with May 2025. The prices of food (total) were down month on month (-0.5%, including vegetables: -2.2%; fruit: -0.8%). Price drops were also recorded for clothing (-1.9%) and footwear (-0.8%), for example.
Methodological notes:
In the Euro area, the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) is used for the purposes of monetary policy. Apart from the individual purposes they serve, the consumer price index (CPI) and the HICP differ in terms of coverage, methodology and weighting. This explains the differences between the CPI and the HICP for Germany. In contrast to the HICP, the CPI also includes household expenditure on owner-occupied housing, games of chance and broadcasting fees. In addition, the HICP product weights are updated annually. Explanatory notes, a methodological paper and the HICP results are also available on the website of the Federal Statistical Office.
Inflation Calculator for personal rate of inflation:
Consumers can use the Personal Inflation Calculator of the Federal Statistical Office to adapt their monthly consumption expenditure on individual product groups according to their own consumption patterns and to calculate their personal inflation rate. In addition, the Price Kaleidoscope gives an overview of the price trend and the weights of various products.
