Press Mortality figures in 2nd quarter of 2025 below median values of previous years

Influenza wave ended in early April, impact of heat felt in late June/early July

Press release No. 258 of 16 July 2025

WIESBADEN – Approximately 236,000 people died in Germany in the 2nd quarter of 2025, according to extrapolated figures of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Consequently, death figures in all three months were lower than the median values of the four previous years: by 2% in April, and by 3% in both May and June. The influenza wave (only in German), which mainly affected mortality figures in January and February, is considered to have ended at the beginning of April. An examination of individual calendar weeks reveals that a heat wave had a significant impact on death figures at the turn of the month into July. According to current extrapolation results, mortality figures in Week 27 (30 June to 6 July) exceeded the comparative value of the four previous years by 8%. An increase in mortality figures in connection with exposure to heat is a well-known effect that has been frequently observed (only in German) in summer months in the past.
