WIESBADEN - The total fertility rate, often referred to as the birth rate, fell to 1.35 children per woman in 2024. It was therefore 2% lower than in 2023, when the fertility rate stood at 1.38 children per woman, taking into account the corrected population count from the 2022 Census. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that there was therefore a marked slowdown in the decline in the fertility rate in 2024. In 2022 and 2023, the fertility rate was down 8% and 7%, respectively, on the preceding year.
