Press release 050 / 2013-02-08: German exports in 2012: +3.4% on 2011

Exports and imports reaching new record values

WIESBADEN – Germany exported goods to the value of 1,097.4 billion euros and imported goods to the value of 909.2 billion euros in 2012. Hence, as further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional data, German exports increased by 3.4% and imports by 0.7% in 2012 on the record year of 2011. 

The foreign trade balance showed a surplus of 188.1 billion euros in 2012, which is the second largest surplus since the introduction of foreign trade statistics in 1950. In 2011, the surplus of the foreign trade balance had been 158.7 billion euros. The largest surplus to date of 195.3 billion euros was recorded in 2007. 

According to provisional results of the Deutsche Bundesbank, the current account of the balance of payments showed a surplus of 166.9 billion euros in 2012, which included the balance of services (–6.7 billion euros), factor income net (+51.8 billion euros), current transfers (–37.1 billion euros), and supplementary trade items (–29.2 billion euros). In 2011, the German current account showed a surplus of 147.2 billion euros. 

In 2012, Germany dispatched goods to the value of 625.7 billion euros to the Member States of the European Union (EU), while it received goods to the value of 577.1 billion euros from those countries. Compared with 2011, dispatches to the EU countries decreased by 0.3%, while arrivals from those countries increased by 0.9%. Goods to the value of 411.9 billion euros (–2.1%) were dispatched to the Euro area countries in 2012, while the value of the goods received from those countries was 404.2 billion euros (+0.7%). In 2012, goods to the value of 213.8 billion euros (+3.3%) were dispatched to EU countries not belonging to the Euro area, while the value of the goods which arrived from those countries was 172.9 billion euros (+1.4%). 

Exports of goods to countries outside the European Union (third countries) amounted to Euro 471.7 billion euros in 2012, while imports from those countries totalled 332.1 billion euros. Compared with 2011, exports to third countries increased by 8.8% and imports from those countries by 0.4%. 

In December 2012, Germany exported goods to the value of 79.0 billion euros (–6.9% on December 2011) and imported goods to the value of 67.0 billion euros (–7.3%).

Exports and imports showed diverging trends on a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis: while exports rose by 0.3% on November 2012, imports went down by a calendar and seasonally adjusted 1.3%. The foreign trade balance recorded a surplus of 16.8 billion euros in December 2012 in calendar and seasonally adjusted terms.
