Press release 202 / 2013-06-18: In seven districts, more than 50% of young people stay to go to university

WIESBADEN – More than 50% of university students studying in the district where they had obtained their university entrance qualification – this was the case in seven out of 223 rural districts and towns not attached to an administrative district with universities in the winter semester of 2011/12. Berlin (59.3%), Munich (59.1%) and Hamburg (58.8%) accounted for the highest shares among these seven districts. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the percentage shares were above 50% also in Kiel (54.9%), Saarbrücken (54.3%), Regensburg (51.9%) and in the rural district of Gießen (51.2%). The decision of where to take up university studies depends, among others, on the universities existing nearby and on the attractiveness and accessibility of university locations in adjacent districts.
