Press release 208 / 2013-06-24: 65% of export transactions with third countries were in euros

WIESBADEN – In 2012, the euro was the means of payment used most frequently for German exports to countries outside the EU (third countries). As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports, 65% of German export transactions to third countries were denominated in euros and 26% in US dollars. Only 10% of exports were paid for in other currencies.

In comparison with the preceding year, the euro was used slightly less often as a means of payment for export transactions: in 2011, 67% of such business had been in euros. The share of the US dollar as a means of payment in export transactions rose by 2 percentage points over that period (2011: 24%).
