Persons killed in road traffic accidentsEnlarge picture WIESBADEN – According to provisional results, 3,340 people died in road traffic accidents in 2013. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a decrease of 260 people or 7.2% compared with 2012. Also, the number of people injured declined by 2.7% to roughly 374,000. The number of traffic accident fatalities was again much lower in 2013 on a year earlier (3,600 people), which had been the year with the lowest number of people killed so far. In a long-term comparison, too, the developments are positive. While an average 58 people were killed in road traffic accidents every day in 1970, their number amounted to 30 in 1990. Last year, an average nine people died on German roads every day. This was a welcome development against the background of a continuously increasing stock of vehicles.
