Press release 475 / 2015-12-18: Municipal budgets record financial surplus of 0.1 billion euros in the first three quarters

WIESBADEN – The core and extra budgets of the municipalities and associations of municipalities in Germany (excluding city states) achieved a surplus of 0.1 billion euros, as defined in public finance statistics, in the first three quarters of 2015. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that revenue increased by 6.3% to 161.9 billion euros, while expenditure rose by 4.4% to 161.8 billion euros. In the first three quarters of 2014, however, a municipal financial deficit of 2.7 billion euros had been recorded.

Taxes, which are the most important source of revenue of municipalities and associations of municipalities, increased by 6.4% to 57.2 billion euros in the first three quarters of 2015.
