Press release No. 428 of 1 December 2016
WIESBADEN – Young women who give birth to a child before reaching the age of 20 are becoming less frequent in Germany and the European Union (EU). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden reports that the number of newborn children in Germany whose mother is younger than 20 years was down from roughly 18,400 in 2006 to roughly 12,100 in 2014. The relevant proportion in all births decreased from 2.7% to 1.7%.
On an EU average, 2.3% of all children born in 2014 had a mother of under 20 years, as reported by the EU statistical office Eurostat. In 2006, the rate had been 3.3%.
