WIESBADEN – The number of people who immigrated to Germany exceeded the number of those who emigrated by roughly 500,000 in 2016. In 2015, the migration surplus had been 1.14 million. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that arrivals totalled 1,865,000 in 2016 and departures across Germany's borders amounted to 1,365,000. There were 272,000 fewer arrivals (–13%) and 368,000 more departures (+37%) than in 2015.
1,719,000 of the 1,865,000 immigrants held a foreign passport: 297,000 (or 15%) less than a year earlier.
