Press release 115 / 2018-03-28: Continued increase in births in 2016

WIESBADEN – In 2016, 792,131 children were born in Germany. The number of babies increased by 54,556, or 7%, compared with 2015 (737,575). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of births increased for the fifth time in a row to reach again the level of 1996. Compared with the previous year, more children were born in all Länder in 2016. In the western German non-city Länder and in the city states, the number of births rose by an average 8%, while the increase was slightly weaker in the eastern German non-city Länder (+4%).
