Pre-release information for external users about statistical results

According to the European Statistics Code of Practice, official statistical results should be published by the statistical institutes themselves and be made available to all external users equally and at the same time. There are justified exceptions to this rule which are accepted in international practice if made transparent. This includes pre-release information for ministries which expect media enquiries on the data released by the statistical institutes. According to the European Statistics Code of Practice, limiting pre-release information is a criterion for a statistical institute’s “impartiality and objectivity”. The goal is to guard against political interference and to ensure the credibility of statistical results by applying transparency and restrictive practice.

The Federal Statistical Office complies with the provisions of the European Statistics Code of Practice and gives pre-release information only to specific users and to a limited extent. Generally, embargoed press releases are made available to the relevant agencies not earlier than the day before release.

The table below gives an overview of pre-release arrangements for selected major economic indicators and for indicators of population/social statistics that currently are much in demand.
