Women are less frequently online than men. According to estimates by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU), around 69% of men but only 63% of women worldwide used the Internet in 2022. This means women are less able to benefit from the advantages of digitalization: they have less opportunity to learn, earn money and make their voices heard online. Accordingly, the ITU considers equal access to the Internet to be an essential building block for achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 ("Achieve gender equality and empower women and girls").
