Fruit, vegetables, horticulture 11 % of area under vegetable cultivation farmed organically in 2017

In 2017, the organically farmed area represented 11 % of the total area of vegetables grown outdoors in Germany. 13,700 hectares were farmed organically, which was an increase of 11 % on 2016. The harvested quantities of organic outdoor vegetables rose by 12 % to just under 319,100 tons in the same period.

In 2017, carrots accounted for the largest proportion of outdoor area devoted to organic farming at roughly 2,100 hectares, followed by fresh peas for threshing and pumpkins at approximately 1,300 hectares each. These three types of vegetables together made up just over 35 % of the area of organic vegetable production.
