With its structural analyses of the German economy as a whole and of individual economic sectors, the Statistical Business Register provides political, economic and scientific stakeholders with an important basis for decision-making.
In 2023, there were a total of 3.5 million Legal Units in Germany. These were primarily Legal Units with fewer than ten employees: according to the Statistical Business Register, they accounted for 87% of the total number of Legal Units.
However, half of the turnover (54%) was generated by Legal Units with more than 250 employees.
Such Legal Units employed 44 % of the dependent employees. This amounted to 15.8 million people. Units with more than 250 employees accounted for 0.5 % of the total workforce.
