5 May 2023 Turnover in the service sector up 0.9% in February 2023 on the previous month

In February 2023, the real (price adjusted) turnover of the service sector in Germany (excluding financial and insurance activities) was up 0.9% on January 2023 according to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) after calendar and seasonal adjustment. In nominal (not price adjusted) terms, turnover was 0.7% higher than in January 2023. Compared with February 2022, turnover increased by 6.5% in real terms and 6.7% in nominal terms. Turnover was therefore up a real 8.1% and a nominal 19.2% compared with the level of February 2020, the corresponding month before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany. The difference between the results in real and nominal terms reflects the significantly higher price level in the service sector.

Current news

Publication of monthly statistics in the trade and service sectors recommences

On 8 October 2024, the Federal Statistical Office has resumed its regular publication of short-term statistics for trade and services with a release of calendar and seasonally adjusted results of wholesale trade turnover in the reference month of July 2024 and on October 10 with a release of calendar and seasonally adjusted results of retail trade turnover in the reference month of August 2024.

Implementing the EU enterprise concept in structural business statistics from reference year 2018

Results concerning enterprises in structural business statistics are based on the common EU enterprise definition - as specified by the EU Regulation on statistical units - for the first time for reference year 2018. In addition, results are still published for the unit of presentation that was used until reference year 2017. In the past, it was referred to as the enterprise though, in the sense of the EU Regulation on statistical units, it was a legal unit. The wording of publications has been adjusted accordingly: data on enterprises (until reference year 2017) will now be referred to as data on legal units.

Services in 2020: information technology sector employed 903,000 people

In 2020, roughly 901,000 people worked in the 95,100 businesses in Germany whose main activity was in the field of information technology. The number of people working in that branch rose by approximately 42,000 (+0.3%) year-on-year, while the number of legal units decreased by 2,500 (-2.7%).

Insurance industry: Gross premiums are growing again

At the end of 2017, roughly 1,288 direct insurance and reinsurance companies and pension funds were operating in Germany. While direct insurers cover various risks of private individuals and businesses, reinsurers cover the risks of other insurance companies. Pension funds are a type of employee pension scheme.
