Data on the short-term economic development in Germany are currently available on the Economic Dashboard, in the GENESIS-Online database and on the Short-term indicators page. We wish to inform you that this last option, the Short-term indicators page, will not be updated from October 2026 and will be deactivated at the start of 2027. The data will continue to be available, however.

The data shown in the table "Economic and financial data for Germany" correspond to the data described on the International Monetary Fund's Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board (DSBB). The additional "National Summary Data Page" gives an overview of the indicators included.

In addition to the tables and supplementary diagrams, we provide in the Open Data section the table data for many short-term indicators in the CSV format for further processing so that you can easily load them into various programs.

Experimental statistics

In the "EXSTAT – Experimental statistics section" we regularly publish new and innovative project results of the Federal Statistical Office. These are obtained by using new data sources and methods. Both the degree of maturity and quality of the results differ from those of official statistics, especially regarding harmonisation, coverage and methodology. Nonetheless these results of the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder offer new and interesting ways of looking at various statistical topics.

Satellite-based early estimate of short-term economic development

28 November 2022 - Satellites can record large areas at short intervals so that information from satellite data is available rapidly and at a small-area level. A feasibility study examines whether information from satellite data can be used to support early estimates of short-term economic development of the Federal Statistical Office.

Early indicator of short-term economic trends based on pedestrian frequencies

11 February 2022 - During the pandemic, there is a correlation between shop-based retail turnover and the number of pedestrians in inner cities. The Federal Statistical Office has examines whether an early indicator of short-term economic trends can be developed on this basis in non-crisis times.

27 April 2020 - The experimental early indicator of the short-term economic trend of the non-financial business economy, based on advance turnover tax returns, allows to provide early information on the turnover development in the non-financial business economy before official results from surveys are available by economic sector.

Smart business cycle statistics based on satellite data

30 December 2019 - Satellites can provide images of large areas of the earth’s surface at short intervals. Technological progress has substantially influenced and improved the availability and analysis of satellite data so that they are coming into play also in official statistics.

The transport index as a leading indicator of economic development

19 December 2020 -The transport index records at an early point in time changes of goods transport by mode.

Truck toll mileage index

1 May 2020 - The daily truck toll mileage index provides approximate indications of the development of industrial production in Germany at a very early stage. The index is calculated from digital process data of the truck toll collection system.
