20 December 2022 1.4% more pensioners in the public service in 2022

On 1 January 2022, the number of public service pensioners amounted to 1,380,300 in accordance with the public officials’ and soldiers’ pensions law. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was an increase of 1.4% on a year earlier. The pensioners received an average gross pension of 3,170 euros per month (2021: 3,160 euros). In addition, roughly 377,700 surviving dependants received relevant pension payments (+0.3%). The expenditure for pensions of the former public officials amounted to 52.5 billion euros in 2021, or roughly 1.5% of the gross domestic product. 8.2 billion euros were spent on surviving dependants’ pensions.
