Quality of employment Relationship with colleagues and supervisors

What is the proportion of employees who feel supported by the people in their direct working environment?

Employed people often spend more time with colleagues and superiors than with friends or family. A good working atmosphere is therefore of central importance for the quality of work.

The information is based on the self-assessment of the interviewees as part of a Europe-wide telephone survey on working conditions.

Almost 80% experience support from colleagues

An important positive aspect of work is a friendly work environment. In 2021, a total of 80% of respondents aged 15 and over said they were always or mostly supported by their colleagues.

However, the percentage of those who perceive support decreases with increasing age. While 86% of the 16-24 year olds experience the most support from their colleagues, the proportion among employees aged 55 and over is 13 percentage points lower (73%). At 75%, men state that they receive support more frequently than women of the same age group (71%).

Almost two thirds of employees receive support from their superiors

Supervisor support also plays an important role in the quality of cooperation and work evironment. Almost two thirds (65%) of the employees in 2021 said they were supported by their superiors. The percentage decreases with with increasing age.Employees aged 55 and over are the least likely to perceive the support of their supervisor (58%), among 16-24 year olds it is 73%.
