Household consumption of housing energy down 0.9% in 2020
Households in Germany consumed less housing energy in the first Covid-19 year of 2020 than in 2019 although people spent more time at home on account of the pandemic. The temperature adjusted consumption of housing energy amounted to a total of 715 billion kilowatt-hours in 2020, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Compared with the previous year’s 722 billion kilowatt-hours, the energy consumption of households thus fell by 0.9%. The decline is due only to the fact that households used less energy for heating and the preparation of hot water. More energy was needed for all other purposes.
