31 March 2023 Households spent an average of 27.8% of their income on rent in 2022

In 2022, the approximately 19.9 million main tenant households in Germany spent an average of 27.8% of their income on rent. This rent to income ratio indicates the proportion of household net income that is spent on gross rent exclusive of heating expenses (defined as net rent exclusive of heating expenses plus operating costs that are independent of consumption). First results are available from the additional microcensus survey of 2022 concerning the housing situation. Based on these results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the rent to income ratio for the roughly 6.6 million households who rented their dwelling in 2019 or later stood at 29.5%. Their ratio was 2.7 percentage points higher than that of the roughly 2.7 million households (26.8%) who concluded rental contracts before 1999.
