Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015 with the aim to substantially improve the living conditions of all people now and in future generations and to protect the planet Earth. To measure progress toward achieving the 17 global goals, a set of 231 internationally comparable indicators was developed, which are to be filled with national data.

Since July 2019, data for Germany and explanatory indicator information have been provided in a processed from and an interactive environment on the Online platform on indicators of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Indicator set of the EU Commission

To monitor sustainable development in the European Union, an EU SDG indicator set was developed under the leadership of Eurostat in 2017. This set of roughly 100 indicators structured along the 17 goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda is intended to measure progress towards the SDGs in an EU-European Union context.

German Sustainable Development Strategy

The Federal Government has committed itself to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda goals at the national level. Consequently, the Federal Government revised the National Sustainable Development Strategy and adopted its new version in January 2017. The Indicator Report of the Federal Statistical Office refers to the indicators set up to measure progress towards achieving the goals of the German Sustainable Development Strategy. It is updated every two years. In addition, the information is available on the online platform on Sustainable development in Germany.

Sustainable development strategies of the Länder

In addition to the Federal Government, the majority of the Länder have their own strategy for sustainable development. Some Länder governments have aligned their strategies with the Global Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, while efforts are being made by other Länder to adjust or draw up their own sustainable development strategy.
