Automotive industry: turnover of 407 billion euros in 2016
Attention focuses on Germany's car manufacturing industry these days as leading German carmakers are suspected of having operated a cartel. Germany is one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. This is why the German car industry is so important to the country's economy.
All in all, 1,327 local units of enterprises with 20 or more persons employed were engaged in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers in 2016. These employed approximately 828,000 people or 14% of the total staff working at local units in manufacturing. They achieved a turnover of 407 billion euros.
The high turnover was attributable not least to strong foreign demand: 63% of the turnover of 2016 (257 billion euros) was achieved abroad.
