Europe Organic farming

Sustainable development

The proportion of agricultural land designated to organic farming is slowly increasing within the EU. 25.7% of Austria's agricultural area was assigned to organic farming, making it to the leading EU Member States in this field in 2020. In Germany the share was significantly lower. In 2021, 9.7% (around 1.6 million hectares) of the agricultural area were organically farmed. This was slightly above the EU average of 9.1% in 2020. The study includes both fully converted areas as well as areas under conversion.

However organic livestock is still very much a niche market in the European Union. According to estimates for the year 2021, only 1% of pigs and 7% of cattles in the EU were farmed organically.

Last update: 09.10.2023. The survey is in accordance with the Regulation (EU) 2018/848 on organic production.
