Schleswig-Holstein is Germany's number one holiday region. In 2023, approximately 322,000 tourism beds were available there. This means that the west German state was on top, followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (307,000) and the region Upper Bavaria (287,000).
In an EU-wide comparison German tourist areas are lagging far behind the classic touristic centres, which offer triple the number of sleeping accommodations. The highest number in the EU was recorded on the Croatian cost of the Adriatic with more than one million tourism beds, followed by the Spanish Catalonia with its holiday areas at the Costa Brava, offering approximately 806,000 sleeping accommodations, and Veneto in Italy (765,000 tourism beds).
