Dear Conference Delegate,

it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 34th General Conference of the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW) 2016 in Dresden. It is a great honor for us to host this conference for the first time in Germany after more than 25 years. I am also pleased that this conference offers an opportunity to have a closer look at the progress achieved since German unification.

The world is moving ahead and new questions as well as demands for more information are arising. The recent past has shown that IARIW’s main fields of interest are at the top of the agenda of politics, economics and society: financial and economic vulnerability, sustainability, economic growth, globalization, productivity, well-being, ageing population or inequality in the distribution of income and wealth are just a short selection of topical issues, where the need for more orientation is evident.

The 2016 IARIW General Conference is a unique opportunity to link the analytical strength of scientific research with the comprehensive experience of statistical measurement as a contribution to better understand and address economic and social challenges. Such an exchange between the academic world, the users and the statistical institutes provides a fruitful basis for developing adequate concepts as well as sound methods to be able to portray the economic, social and ecological situation in a relevant and reliable way. This is even more important when statistical results are used for political decision making or monitoring.

I would like to invite you to join the 34th IARIW General Conference 2016 in Dresden. Your contribution will be important to make this conference a success. The German Federal Statistical Office will do its best to support you.

Dieter Sarreither,
President of the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis)
