   <title>Environmental protection as an economic factor - Turnover of 66 billion euros in 2015</title>

<description>Environmental protection measures do not only improve the state of the environment, they also are an important economic factor. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the establishments of the industry and service sectors in Germany generated a turnover of 66.0 billion euros in 2015 from goods, services and construction operations for environmental protection. The highest turnover of 37.9 billion euros was achieved in the field of climate protection. Among the main pillars are measures to improve energy efficiency and save energy (19.8 billion euros) as well as measures to use renewable energy sources (16.5 billion euros).</description></item>

   <title>Public debt down by 0.7% in 2016</title>

<description>The debt owed by the overall public budget (Federation, Länder, municipalities/associations of municipalities and social security funds, including all extra budgets) to the non-public sector amounted to 2,005.6 billion euros at the end of 2016. This represents a per capita debt of 24,407 euros in Germany. Based on the final results available, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that debt decreased by 0.7% (15.1 billion euros) compared with the revised results as at 31 December 2015. The non-public sector comprises credit institutions, the remaining domestic sector (for instance private businesses) and the remaining non-domestic sector.</description></item>

   <title>8.5% increase in the population with a migrant background</title>

<description>In 2016, the population with a migrant background reached a new record high for the fifth time in a row. Based on results of the microcensus, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that roughly 18.6 million people in Germany had a migrant background in 2016. This was a year-on-year rise of 8.5%, which was the highest increase since recording began in 2005. The exceptional increase was mainly attributable to the high level of immigration of foreigners, including people seeking refuge, in 2015 and 2016.</description></item>
