WIESBADEN – In the first half of 2022, the number of inhabitants in Germany exceeded 84 million for the first time. On 30 June 2022, the number of people living in Germany was by 843,000 higher than at the end of 2021, which is a population increase of 1.0%. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that following German reunification, such extensive population growth was recorded only in 1992 (+700,000), when borders had been opened in eastern Europe and war was waged in Yugoslavia, and in 2015, when migrants fled to Germany (+978,000). For comparison: In all of 2021, the population grew by only 82,000 people, or 0.1%. The current development is due to the arrival of refugees from Ukraine as a consequence of the Russian war of aggression. Net immigration of Ukrainians to Germany amounted to approximately 750,000 in the first half of 2022. Total net immigration was around 1.0 million according to provisional results. It was thus seven times higher than in the first half of 2021 (134,000). At the same time, the excess of deaths over births had a dampening effect on population growth. Deaths exceeded births in Germany by 161,000 in the first half of 2022.
