WIESBADEN – In 2015, the police recorded a total of 2.5 million traffic accidents on German roads. This was an increase of 4.6% compared with the preceding year. All in all, 3,459 people died, 82 or 2.4% more compared with 2014. At today's press conference on accidents on German roads in 2015 in Berlin, Dieter Sarreither, President of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), stated that the number of traffic accident fatalities in 2015 increased for the second year in a row.
Nonetheless, the number was considerably lower than in the years between 1950 and 2012. 1970 saw the sad record of 21,332 traffic accident fatalities. Since then the number has declined by 83.8%.
