WIESBADEN – According to first results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany's total population rose by 978,000 in 2015 on a year earlier (+1.2%) to stand at 82.2 million at the end of the year. This was the highest population growth since 1992 when the relevant increase had been 700,000. In 2014 the growth had been smaller (+430,000 people or +0.5%). The population increase in 2015 was the result of a high net immigration.
