WIESBADEN – According to provisional results, roughly 11.0 million pupils are receiving education in schools of general education and vocational schools in Germany in school year 2016/2017. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this is a slight increase of 0.3% compared with the previous school year. Thus the total number of pupils has again increased slightly for the first time since school year 2000/2001. However, this year-on-year rise is only attributable to a higher number of male pupils. Their number has increased by 0.7% to 5.7 million compared with school year 2015/2016, while the number of female pupils has continued to decline slightly by 0.1% to currently 5.3 million.
