Press Manufacturing in January 2017: New orders –7.4% seasonally adjusted on the previous month

WIESBADEN – Based on provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that price-adjusted new orders in manufacturing had decreased in January 2017 a seasonally and working-day adjusted 7.4% on December 2016. For December 2016, they increased by 5.2% compared with November 2016, thus confirming the provisional result published in the previous month. Price-adjusted new orders without major orders in manufacturing had decreased in January 2017 a seasonally and working-day adjusted 2.9% on December 2016.

In January 2017, domestic orders decreased by 10.5% and foreign orders by 4.9% on the previous month. New orders from the euro area were down 7.8% on the previous month, new orders from other countries decreased 2.9% compared to December 2016.

In January 2017 the manufacturers of intermediate goods saw new orders fall by 4.0% compared with December 2016. The manufacturers of capital goods showed decreases of 9.9% on the previous month. For consumer goods, a decrease in new orders of 2.0% was recorded.

Turnover +3.7% seasonally adjusted on the previous month

The price-adjusted turnover in manufacturing in January 2017 was up a seasonally and working-day adjusted 3.7% on the previous month. In December 2016, the corrected figure shows a decrease of 2.8% to November 2016 (primary –2.9%).

The data shown here on new orders and on turnover are based on the volume index of manufacturing, seasonally and working day adjusted by means of X-12-ARIMA. New orders and turnover are covered and evaluated in accordance with the Classification of Economic Activities, 2008 edition (WZ 2008). New orders are covered only in selected economic branches of manufacturing.
